I was just going threw a roll of pennys that I got from a local bank where I'm staying. I found this 1995 penny that clearly has an O stamped under the date. At first I thought it was some kind of die error buble. But as I looked closer it appeared to be a complete circle in the form of an O. I was wearing gloves so I lightly rubed it to see if it was maybe a water spot or something. But it's not. It's slightly raised like a mint mark would be and directlly under the third nine and in between the second. Has anyone heard of this before cus I haven't? I would show some pictures, but I'm out of town and don't have a way at the moment to post anything. I just want to know if this is possible and if anyone has ever heard of this happening before. The only thing I can think of is it some how got stamped with an O on accident, when it should have been something else.
We would need a picture but there is no way for an O to be there in place of a mint mark. If the coin were punched with an actual O , using a hand punch, it would simply be damage. In any case, a picture will solve the mystery when you get back. Have Fun, Bill
Well, it is definitely not a "O" Mintmark as in the New Orleans Mint! However, I would imagine that it is possible that it is a "Dropped Letter". As Bill stated, we need pictures of the coin and a close-up of the Date and the "O" or whatever it is. Frank
sounds like a dropped letter, although it could be a planchet flaw as well but that seems less likely.
