Looking thru some change I received today I found this dime.. Which has a broadstrike along with what seems to me that it might have gotten stuck in the machines due to the scratches it has.... I don't think it's environmental damage because the scratches along the rim end somwhere around the neck.. Wouldn't the ear & neck have scratches too? Please don't be harsh I'm still fairly new to this
Welcome to CT CJLA. You have what we call PMD or Post Mint Damage. The coin in question did not leave the Mint in that condition. Rather, it's been filed or grinded to give it that appearance. It's a spender, worth face value or $.10. You can easily see the scratch marks.
Looks like all post strike damage. Look on the edge , if it has reeding around the edge then the collar, which is basically the third die did deploy in the proper manner and your coin would not be broadstruck
Yeah, unfortunately. The key for this one is the rim, which is completely developed on your coin as shown by the fact that it was there to take the brunt of the damage. A broadstruck coin, by definition, wouldn't have had that rim development since the collar - which creates most of the rim - is absent. So one of your first questions when considering any coin with strike anomalies is, "Is the rim fully developed?" That will immediately narrow the possible explanations for what you're looking at.
