My husband loves collecting coins. Always switching them out at work. He got this one the other day and the back appears to be missing.....anyone have any thoughts. My kids are intrigued either way =)

It seems to have been milled out or machined out of some sort.

    Thanks,

I collect these. It's the shell part of a Magicians coin. As stated, the Quarter was machined to make it hollow. Then another Quarter is cut and machined to fit into the shell. It can be used for different types of magic tricks or used as a spy coin to hide small items inside.

I've seen a lot of Kennedy halves and a few Ikes made into magician's coins, never seen a quarter though.

I was going to say that it was a stash coin like we used to have back in the 80s and 70s to put let's say contraband in! A magician's coin will do. Same thing.

Half way to it being a magician's coin.

Very common - coin shops see them all the time.
    .....and the two-headed and/or two-tailed pieces
    that they turn into, also.
