there is a crack running through the 1 in the date. there is another crack under his tail. lastly there is a crack running along the base of the neck which can be seen in pic 2 and 4. if all cracks connect, and connect to the rim, how is it not? am I missing something??
Yes. A retained cud is completely disconnected from the die, not just cracked. It's quite possible for that crack to be complete, rim-to-rim, without it being detached from the die. http://www.error-ref.com/anvil-die-retained-cud/
All you have to do to solve that problem is learn to like it for what it is. Coins like yours are what appeals to me in numismatics. Yes, it would be cool if it were a full retained cud with field displacement, but the only difference between yours and that is, literally, maybe a few minutes of work. That die could have shattered on the strike after your coin, and yours is the latest die state it ever struck.
I appreciate you trying to cheer me up (very nice job btw)...but if it WAS a retained then one of that size would have been a first for me. now...that search continues. DANGIT!
