I found this crh the other day. Could it be a strike-through grease or just pmd? The reason I'm questioning this one is because most of MONTICELLO is faint, except for the O, which is still prominent. Also seems a little bit of Jefferson's nose is missing. Any ideas?
I'd need to see better photos if possible, but here is my take: multiple issues. The circulation damage makes it hard to be definitive, thus why better photos might bear out this-or-that. Die deterioration may be a factor Poor die maintenance; maybe a heavy hand at maintaining the die Probably a weak strike (the field/rim indicate this to me) May also be affected by grease, but I'm thinking not a likely or main culprit
Oh, Son! You're letting him off easy. It's just plain old fashioned PMD or Post Mint Damage. Joking aside, all I see is damage with maybe and that's a maybe, some "grease filled" die error. I think.
I recall when I CRHed that 1994 was a year where the die was over polished and the nose blended with the field. This looks like one but it has also been damaged in circulation. The damage may be masking the errors by the mint. Either way, it’s a spender.
Ok, guys. Thank you. I was sure hoping. But you're right...too much damage. I've found a lot of nickels from that decade with similar damage lately.
