Disvovered this coin, see pics and tell me if this is a normal thing or not for the 1993 dime. I have another pic I am trying to scan in. The outside rim of the coin (where the notched edges are) are bi-coloured. I'll post when I can get a half-decent pic
What do you mean, like half copper/ half silver? If so, that is normal because all non-silver U.S. coins (commonly referred to as clad coins) have that type of edge. If it is a silver U.S. coin, the edge is all-silver.
It is normal for the edges of our coins since 1964 to be bi colored. they are a solid copper core with only a super thin nickel coating on the outside. the coins are not plated with the nickel on the edges and the copper is showing on them. your coin does look like it was struch with slightly misaligned dies but this does not add much extra value to the coin.
I just posted on here (or so I thought) Worth 10 cents. Dimes and quarters have that "look" on them, making it easy to determine if a coin is clad or silver
So you guys have yoru coins that bare the different metals? Interesting. Struch? (meaning struck?) Misalinged die? Sorry new to the lingo. Can you explain?
lara, Clad coins are like a sandwich - a copper core in the middle and copper-nickel layers. The copper core of the coin is visible on the edge of the coin.
Hobo, thank you. There is SO much to learn and observe from you guys. I enjoy reading every post. Mind you not all of it sinks in, but I read and try to retain as much as possible. This hobby is time consuming and very detailed. And I am loving every minute of it! Thanks
Lara are you the same Lara that tries to sell what you think is error coins on Ebay? some folks on Ebay are trying to sell horribly damaged bent and banged up coins that looks like a dozer has run over them and these sellers actually believe their damaged coins are awesome error coins. I try my best to help some of them to learn but this just wastes my time.
lmao! That is too funny. No Rascal. That is not me. I just started looking at coins a week ago Sunday past. I have been known to sell items on ebay, but NEVER coins. Just odd things around the house that both hubby and I didn't want anymore and had some ebay value to them. I would never try to forge a coin as something that it wasn't. Even though I know nothing about coins, I would know enought to say that a damaged coin is, well a damaged coin and that it bears no value. On a side note about selling onebay, I did manage to sell Puppy Training Pads to a woman in Greece :O It was a gag listing and she wanted them lol No, no worries Rascal and everyone else, it's not me on there selling coins.
Lara i'm sorry about even thinking you may be the Lara from Ebay. I just thought you may be the same person because it appeared that you don't know much about error coins. At least you are starting out right if you do get interested in error coins , it's always best to ask questions and learn about them before trying to start selling right away. I always tell folks that Ebay is a good place to learn about error coins but here lately I don't know about that. There are so many man made fake and altered coins that it even confuses me sometimes. One good thing about the error coin section on Ebay is that the new error collectors can see what a error coin should look like if they look for the authenticated coins. The internet is a good learning tool. I wish I would have had the internet back in 1983 or 84 when I gave close to a million dollars worth of 1983 doubled die cents back to the bank. This is the honest truth , I thought they were the worthless form of machine or strike doubling . I had 40 rolls of them and every roll averaged around 30 of the reverse side doubled dies.
Rascal, no worries about the whole ebay thing, I know how people often get scammed on there. I place very little ethical value on using ebay as a research tool. Sorry to hear about your rolls of dimes. That kind of sucks.
