    Hi Boston,

The coin appears to be environmentally damaged. Pennies like this sometimes have a rough life sitting in cup holders having sodas, and you name it spilled on them. All these things can affect the toning of the coin. Of course the cup holder is just one scenario among many, but you get the idea.

Wished I could get a better pic for you all it really looks more silver than in this picture but there is some discoloration the only way I can describe it like another copper coin was sitting on top of it half way

The mint doesn't even have silver blanks laying around the size of a penny.... so whatever it is, it isn't silver.

Welcome to the forum Boston 38. This is most likely from a chem lab experiment commonly done in high schools or beginning college chem.

    http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryhowtoguide/a/goldsilverpenny.htm

It is first done by depositing a layer of zinc on the copper of the cent, The zinc , since it is pure produces a silver colored surface if done correctly. Then if sufficient heat is applied, the plated on zinc fuses with the underlying copper to produce bright brass , which then supposedly looks like gold penny. My classes put about 100 a year in circulation. :) Jim
