1992 Steel penny? I've never heard of such a thing... Does a magnet pick it up? Can you post pictures please? Be well! Tom
Tom, Thanks. It must not be steel, because a magnet will not pick it up. The color and shine of it is similar to a nickel. All the details are very clear. Could it have been minted in error without the copper plating? Could someone have chemically removed the copper plating? I will try to post a picture.
Yes to everything. It could also be that someone has plated the coin with chrome or silver. If you can, please weigh the coin as that may help us determine what it is.
probably no copper on the surface. 1943 Steel pennies were clearly Withdrawn from circulation in 1945 and the concept was to never be used again, ever...from what I heard. Any steel pennies after 1945 are probably Counterfit or Zinc hehe
It sounds like a zinc planchet that has not been plated, but struck with the 1 Cent dies.In other words,an off-metal error coin. Can anyone please confirm? Aidan.
I have a silver/steel/nickel 1992 penny a well. It is a little bigger and heavier than a regular penny. I would like to get some info as well. Susan
