I think Mr. Lincoln is missing some detail around the neck, jaw and mouth area. I don't see much evidence of die polishing so I'm leaning towards struck through grease. Thoughts? WIN_20231126_17_42_32_Pro.jpg WIN_20231126_17_42_53_Pro.jpg

I've always assumed these are from die polishing. Curious to see if anyone else has any other ideas.

I think Die Wear has weakened the design details. If there was Grease or Debris inside the die the details of Abe beard should be lost and not show through.
The defining edge of the design has become soft and weak. Note the rim ridge that is a sign of die wear. Struck with a Late Stage Die is my guess as to why the coin looks the way it does.

Also thought die wear could possibly be responsible.

Neat specimen. The obverse die looks like it was paired with a newer reverse die. Strike looks good, especially the reverse details. Obverse appears weak but rim is fully defined. Makes me believe that the die is worn. Attrition is also obvious around the periphery. I agree with the die deterioration assessment.

Heavy die Polishing lines wear away, still the deteriorated and mushy late die state signs are there.

The missing details on Lincoln's bust are entirely due to overzealous intentional die abrasion.
