When ya say 'laundry', do you mean 'it was in it' or 'it was intended for.'......

Those parallel lines (including those to the left of his neck) look like they could be die polishing.

Just FYI, don't always take the first answer given. Always wait for to least a handful of people to respond with their ideas and see what's stated. Some people can be wrong.

I learned this when I was 15 and I threw away a bunch of WWII newspapers I found in an attic just because the first answer I got on Yahoo Answers was that "they were just old junk" and that "the library has that stuff already". :(

Those are die abrasion lines running out of George's neck and has nothing to do with going through the laundry. Had the coin been in uncirculated condition, it might have some value to the right collector. But for now, maybe a $1.50?

Probably polishing away a clash. If you look at the reverse, you may see a faint outline of Washington's head.

Parallel lines--some of which are raised-and flowing in the same direction are indicative of a file having been used on the field of Working Die by a Mint Employee to smooth out some type of imperfection. Your Quarter is not unique, as all coins struck with this Obverse Die will show these lines to some degree, gradually wearing down as the Die is used, and finally disappearing on subsequent coins when that Die is eventually replaced due to wear-out or breakage.

yeah thanks, and being 47 I know when to wait for an answer I like---it still ended up in the wash machine in Topeka Kansas---just looking for info--and I got it--$1.50 here--$150.00 error on fee-bay maybe--thanks all--learned again--

These are probably accidental die scrapes. While they most often appear on the anvil die and are the result of a mis-timed feeder, they're not unknown on the hammer die (the obverse die in this case). Die scratches that result from intentional die abrasion usually run in many different directions (there are recent exceptions).

thanks Mike--just found it weird how the scratches were on the left side of Mr. Washingtons hair in the void and on the other-not through his hair---
    Right on thanks
