Hi all! I am new to coin hunting and this forum. I found a 1991 penny today with the 199 showing and a faint 1 at the end. Also the last "T" in trust seems faint. Lastly the rim seems thicker than it should be. I took picture with a coin next to it. ( yes I know another 1991 would have been best but I didn't have one) Any thoughts on this coin would be great. Error, PMD, value any?
Welcome! Judging from the die scratches, I would guess that this is the result of an abraded die. There may have been something on the die that the mint noticed, and they scrubbed it away. In the process, they also thinned out the 1 in the date. Not much value for this coin, although it is a good educational piece. Keep up the hunt!
I found one too. I just got it today, it has the 1 missing at the end of 1991. The 1 is marked but does not protrude. So I googled it and found your post. Mine does not have any of the other errors you mention, only the date.
The thicker rim (on only one side) is a result of a misaligned die (MAD). The top die was offset a little. It is an error but it is so common that there is no premium over one cent.
The lines that were IDed as die scratches appear from your photos to be consistent across the face of your coin and are on the bust as well as the field. These would be roller lines and were present on the planchet before the coin was struck. The missing design elements were caused by the coin being struck by a grease filled die
In missing the 9 and one, with all the letters on the coin, penny still looks great. Grease still on the coin.
