Could be a bit of an issue called Improperly Annealed.
Nickels don't have a clad layer so it can't be a clad issue where the copper core is exposed such as dimes and quarters. In an Improperly annealed coin some of the copper mixed with the nickel will stand out due to overheating of the planchet to soften it before it is struck.

Could also be environmental damage. Some chemical that affected the appearance.
