Hi! I am just recently discovering the world of coins and working on my collection. Today I came across this 1991 D Penny and not sure what to think about all that is going on. Can someone please provide some advice if this error or damage it could have sustained over the years? Many Thanks!
I am also curious about learning about this one that caught my eye. 1964, seems to have a overly large chin and the T on the end of Trust, almost looks like it fell off the coin. Anyone know what is going on? Thanks!
It looks as though the coin took direct hits in these areas after it left the mint. If you look closely you can see the damage to the rim also at the T in Trust. The beard, I'm not sure about, but the Lincoln cent has undergone many design changes over the years on the obverse. This was in the hair, the beard especially.
The beard is what drew me to this coin even though it looks like it has gone though a bit of a beating. Still impressed that the lettering can literally be knocked off a coin.
The lettering can sometimes be knocked around during coin rolling when the ends are crimped and also show circular cuts in the surface. Pretty rough on the coins.
The cheek, nose and brow appear to be affected. We'd need better-resolution pics to dx that. The flat T could just be plugged grease. That is to say, the T on the die that made it was plugged with grease.
