Hey guys, I found what I believe is an overpolished die error. Some detail is missing at the back of the neck and the general area is a bit flatter than expected, but the camera couldn’t pick up on that fine of detail. I included a pic of a normal 1990 penny for comparison. Thoughts? Is it an error or should I throw it back?
Possibly, but the way you formatted your pics, there is no way to enlarge or zero in on the area in question. Do you see any die polishing marks? This could also just be a weak strike from a worn die.
Sorry about the pics. No I don’t see any polishing marks like I’d expected. Just a weak strike was my second thought but I wasn’t sure on that either. There isn’t much else to see on the penny outside the slightly less detailed area I indicated.
Welcome to CT. Based upon the details elsewhere on the coin, it is possible that grease or something caused that one area to be weak. Maybe others have an idea. Possibly a plating issue?
