1990 Quarter with parts missing

    Does anybody have an guess of what may have happened to this quarter. I have an idea. I just want to see if anything during the minting process could have caused this.

    i would say a teenager with too much time( and a pair of weird cutters) on his hands lol

    Post mint damage. I am virtually positive this coin was not struck this way. That said, I am anything but an error expert, so I'll sit back and read the rest of the responses.

    Definatly post mint.
    My theory is that someone needed to balance a machine or used it as a shim.

    it could be a number of other things too... as you said, a machine shop.

    It doesn't appear to be a clipped planchet, but I could be wrong. Appears to me to be post-mint.

    i dont think a BB would penetrate and sheer the metal like that. IF the BB could penetrate the coin like that, it would leave a somewhat concave edge around the missing parts.
