here i have both scanned and photographed images of the quarter, i tried my best to capture the quarter's image... on the reverse of the quarter the "copper" has a lot of luster...

What does the edge look like - is it copper colored too ? Weighing the coin should provide a definitive answer.

the coin should way sigificantly less than its original weight, which is 25.7 g i believe..

It should also be thinner than a regular quarter.

If the weight is correct, it may have been in a fire, I've seen coins with that condition.

Boy I hope not or a whole lot of folks have fakes :D The correct weight should be 5.67 grams.

    Hi,
The wear on the high points and any areas that are scraped seem to show the normal color underneath a layer of the darker color.
I think it is some form of toning.
