1989 Lincoln question

    I know this is common because I see the all the time in my searches. Last night I found this one and now I wonder what kind of doubling this is. It does not appear very "shelf" like and I know it is not true doubling. It looks like some kind of ghost. Probably just another silly question from the new guy, but hey, that's why I'm here. (I can magnify it more if necessary.)

    It is a function of what is called die deterioration doubling.

    Keep in mind that it looks different on plated cents such as the coin you pictured, than it does on U.S. Nickels , for example. The doubling is for the same technical reason but the end result on the coin is a little different.
