Poor Abe. This man simply cannot catch a break lately. It is just one disaster after another... Anyway, this was once part of a die cap, but the "walls" came off due to the trauma of repeated strikes. The "floor" is what stays on the face of the die, while the "walls" ride up the shaft or neck of the die. I have no idea how coins like this can possibly be graded. (MS65RB) Do any of you?
I scratched my head about this as well. Abe's face is quite sharp in the fragment. Maybe this is what the graders look at when assigning MS65.
Simple, you look at the coin. Is it MS or not. If it is not MS, you judge it by the amount of wear. If it is MS the four criteria kick in. I have no clue what this coin is graded but I hope it is in either a MS-64 or MS-65 slab.
