I was given a six coin set of 1989 sealed proofs. This set contains a reverse side large D mint mark in the middle. What is it? I collect mostly Morgans as well as walking Liberty's startin 1986, so I am not that familiar with pennies. Any ideas?

I'd guess you have half of a 1989 mint set. It's not too unusual for these to be very proof like.

The so called penny is actually just a mint token to identify the manufacturer.

We really need more info than we have here.

No, I think you're correct. The token is in an Uncirculated Mint Set and identifies that half of the set that was struck at the Denver Mint. The other half of the set would have a token with a large "P" on it representing the coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint.

This is not a Proof Set. The 1989 Proof Set was struck in San Francisco and the coins would have the "S" mintmark and be housed in a hard plastic case.
