Good morning all, I’m trying to learn about doubling and found a coin while searching my coin rolls that I thought I would share to see if it has doubling on the date or if it’s just a trick of the eye? If it is doubling I would also like to know if it’s machine or die? I tried to do some research and the only thing I could find is that the Liberty is meant to get slightly thicker towards the center of the coin. Any help would be much appreciated 1989 d penny by Darren Edwards posted Jul 16, 2021 at 8:38 AM 1989 d penny by Darren Edwards posted Jul 16, 2021 at 8:38 AM 1989 d penny by Darren Edwards posted Jul 16, 2021 at 8:38 AM
It's classic DDD - Die Deterioration Doubling. Common issue on Copper Plated Zinc Cents. Nothing to do with a true Doubled Die. Considered worthless doubling.
1989 D is the year with the most examples http://www.error-ref.com/die-deterioration-doubling-incuse/
Thank you for the replies, I will take a look at that link to try and soak up some of the info on the subject
@Darren Edwards Book mark the following site. Not only does it have a list of known doubled dies, it has good explanations of mechanical doubling, die deterioration, etc. If you spend some time studying the info in the tabs "worthless doubling", " how dies are made", and "doubled dies" you'll learn a lot and things should start making sense. You'll learn something from asking questions, but there are so many MD and DDD coins out there, it will seem like you're spinning your wheels just posting and getting "no value added" responses. As with anything, if you want to be knowledgeable, you need to put in the study time. Www.doubleddie.com
