Struck through a capped die. Nice find

I think that is more likely to be Struck Through Debris. A capped die should show a more even and flatter distortion of the surface, and not a mixture of fine design detail and flat distortion that comes with Struck Through Debris. JMO

Having this in hand is definitely a benefit compared to making a call as to what happened. I personally believe more less for a better way of explaining a "perfect storm", as I can honestly say that I see evidence of a defective plachet, greese, wood, and or cloth strike though. Adding to that list a sturdier piece of F.O. behinde Abes head..Do I think the blank was defective and splintered.....shedding the top layer of the peel....as if you look the back of Abes head and shoulder show a line the runs top to bottom. Where I believe the peel detached from.
Needless to say its a very cool find from a small can that I kept in a kitchen cabinet drawer.
This for best explanation it was where I dumped daily pocket change that I hadn't had time to look at durring my day. Since I haven't worked since 12/20 the small can with lid fell off my radar until I went hunting for holes in album.

Don't have the benefit of having it in hand, but you may want to consider the cracked and peeling appearance to be coming from the deterioration of a die cap. The cap will become work hardened through repeated strikes and become brittle. The brittle metal can crack and spall (especially with the thin copper plating) resulting in the "struck through" look.

I don't believe the the plating flaked off as there is no exposed zinc and for it to split within the plating, 8 microns (0.0003") is pretty thin to spilt intragranularly

Just some things I would consider from a metallurgy/material science perspective.

Maybe @Fred Weinberg has an opinion

The first thing I saw was the crack and missing pieces. It’s an ugly coin but it’s a great coin, if you know what I mean. I’d add that to my collection any day.

Looks like a 'struck thru thinning die cap' error to me.

The Die Cap has thinned out so much from previous strikes
that it's very thin, and the obv. design is showing thru those
    strikes at this point.
