I saw another post that mentioned a term called Indirect Design Transfer. When I looked up the term it made me think about a coin I asked bout on another forum a few years ago. I was told this was nothing, but after reading about IDT it made me want to get a second opinion.

Take a look at the right side of this obverse. You can see a shadowed edge running above and below the date. Everything in between this edge and Abe is a little incuse. There is even some on the other side of Abe that is similar in shape just not as noticeable. In hand this "depression" looks just like the monument on the reverse only up side down.

    Pics are large..sorry.

So what's the verdict? is this nothing? I do believe I still have it. Didn't want to toss this one for some reason.

I understand that IDT is die deterioration and not worth anything. I am just looking for an explanation for the "depression" on this coin. It is actually somewhat common in Denver LMCs minted in 1988 and I have tossed a bunch more that were less severe.

    Thanks all...Mont.

It's a slight IDT.. I have seen many newer coins have that effect. Its very common.

Thank you! When I asked on the other forum all I got for an answer was it was DD or it was "nothing" and I should toss it. I have thought about that every time I see this in a late 80s LMC. I just could never figure out, until tonight that is, how a die could deteriorate and have this affect on a coin.

Not even 2 am and already learned something new today.
