1988 Upside -down Vertical D/D to the East.

    This is my best guess as to what to label this find according to Wexler's RPM listings. I would like conformation and verification on this find, as well as the proper labeling.

    Also, how common is this type of find?

    I think it was just a fluke that this occurred. It looks like zinc rot to me.

    Unfortunately, the other gentlemen are correct, but on the plus side your photos are so much nicer than most new (and many established) members post. Kudos, and welcome to the forum.

    This is actually all to common with zinc cents. When a coin it stamped the metal has to move into the design on the die, this action causes the plating to go thin and allows the zinc underneath the be exposed to the salts of being handled by people.
    I can see where the copper plating has peeled away from the mintmark.
