Some "Newbies" may wonder if this is an Error but Obviously to more "Seasoned" members this is PMD or Post Mint Damage. The question : Is this a coin that has faced the match of a Bench grinder or maybe a Dryer drum??? All comments Welcome. Sorry not my Coin.
Probably a grinding wheel. A great number of these are misidentified as being "dryer coins". It's usually impossible to be certain unless there are blade marks surviving under the missing metal or the diameter is reduced. These are caused by the metal being shaved off with a knife or perhaps a file. There are lots of ways that coins get damaged but other than in rotating machinery or through intent there is a strong tendency for damage to be irregular. Coins can get the circular scratches by someone turning while standing on one but typically these are caused by coin rolling machines. You can't really tell the difference. Quarters have a 30 year life expectancy so this one's time is up. It's a wonder how many old coins are still around.
PMD one way or another. I think using "Dryer coin" is like using Kleenex for tissues, it's just a way to categorize a coin. It doesn't necessarily mean that coin was stuck in a dryer.
