Hello all, New to the forum,

I have recently taken up the hobby of penny roll searching for error coins. I have searched about $300 worth so far and have found what I believe to be a decent variety of coins. My finds include 2X 1994 DDR, 98 Wide AM, 2000 Wide AM, 1982 DDO, 1983 DDR, bunch of 30-50's wheats (1917 S oldest), and a handfull of 60-80's BU looking coins. I even found an indian head penny which was unexpected. Unfortunately the date is worn off.

In any case, I also found a 1988 P with the reverse of an '89. The difference is observed when viewing the FG on the reverse (serifs on the G). I have found references to this variation on a few websites, however, I have not been able to find any indications to the potential value of this coin. I searched the web, postings from within this site, and on ebay, but have not been able to find anything. Anybody here have any ideas?

Here are a couple of sites that reference the variation:

    Thanks a bunch

I recently saw an "want to buy" ad, AU- $50, MS-63 or higher $150. This is just what a person is willing to pay for them, not an actual pricing...

No, that's not my thread, but that is the same coin. I would definitely consider my coin AU, so it's nice to know that someone is at least willing to pay $50 for it. I'm not all that interested in selling it, I am just curious about what it "would" sell for. Thanks for the replies guys.

Ya, I figured that I had probably been pretty lucky so far. I haven't been keeping track of the exact amount, it's definitely somewhere between $300 to $500 though. I have been keeping all of the copper pennies and have accumulated about $70 worth. I think I get about 20% coppers, so the math works out well.

I seem to get good coins in spurts. I found both of the 94 DDR's in the same box, the 82 and 83 DD's in the same box, and the 98 and 00 AM's in the same box. Not only do I get spurts in the same box but they also seem to follow the same theme, strange .

In case anyone was interested, this pretty nice '88 cent with the '89 reverse recently sold on ebay for $17.45 total. Kinda disappointing considering the supposed scarcity. I guess there isn't much of a demand.

Cherd - some varities take time to get reconized

over on Lincoln Cent Resource - i think some have been trying to get it more accepted - like getting in JT Stanton's Cherrypickers - with myself - it deserves to get on the list. Some varities are so difficlut to see and understand but the 1988/89 is very easy to see, especially being a mule. The new reverse was used before the being of the new year date. i believe its the only one i can think of being used before the new year instead of a carry over design.

i know that Brad's top 50 list finally got the 1988/89 on it

Hmm, interesting. By that reasoning, maybe picking up the penny at this point in time would have been a bargain at 18 bucks.

It does seem to be premature usage of the reverse die. However, I figured that someone must have forgotten to swap out the obverse die when they started making '89 pennies. Either way same result. I suppose it would be easy to determine if an example has been found in a roll of uncirculated coins. This is probably the case, I don't know.

i dont think someone forgot to swap out the dies. More likely both mints ran out of die#5 and had to use die#6 for for the end of the 1988 production run because 1988 P's and D's have both been found with the 89 reverse. It could of been a misjudgement of how many dies were needed ?

:secret: Also, i bet the mint didnt think anyone would see the difference anyways.

I am going to add the realistic touch, as I often do. There is no way to find what was on that list in only $300.00 worth of cents searched.

I am suggesting that the original poster re-examine the coins or post some images here so that we can properly identify what he has found.

The likelihood is that the coins are being mis-identified and are probably victimized by machine doubling and or die deterioration.

I am not trying to be a pain in the patoots but the numbers are impossible unless someone put a collection of die varieties back into circulation. In other words....It's impossible to have found all that in so few cents searched.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I'll take some pictures of the coins and post them. I'm not sure whether I'll be able to take pictures with enough detail, but I'll give it a shot.

I am certain that the 94 DDR's, the wide AM's, and the 88 with 89 reverse are legit. The 82 and 83 pennies could possibly be machine doubling, I'll let you guys determine that. I've actually found another 98 wide AM and a 2009 DD finger penny since my initial post. I'll take pics of those as well.

Since we are kinda off subject I'll start another post. "Error Pennies in $300 worth of cents"

I haven't invested that much yet but I have found a lot of interesting coins such as close AM, touching AM, whole AMERICA to close, 1983 with a weak E or not E at all. What I do is get $5-10 in pennies at my bank and tell them not give me new pennies if posible then after check and recheck them I bring back to the bank adding what I have saved so is kind of recicling and only cost me a few cent each time. Today I guess I got a 1988 rdv 006 but I need to make sure of that yet.

First, welcome to the neighborhood, Hector!

You do realize that this thread is almost 7 years old, don't you? You probably would be better off if you started a new thread, but skip the thumbnails and use "Full Image" for your photos.

Who hasn't? Those are the only ones entering this hobby, these days, most of whom are coming on here asking questions in half-intelligible run-on sentences before they even have but a Wikipedia understanding of what in the hell they're even looking for.
