I have a 1988 P dime that shows some errors.. I am new to the whole coin thing and was wondering if anyone could give me any info on it. Coin appears to show some doubling and strange metal patterns. Patterns are under the nose. Doubling shown on the "P", the underside of the neck, the E in liberty and on the reverse side the E and M in e pluribus unum. any info would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

There is no listed Doubled Die Obverse/Reverse, for that specific date, in the Cherrypickers' Guide or any other online variety sites. On the reverse it almost looks as if it could be a Late Stage Capped Die (judging by the word "Unum"), but the doubling is most likely just machine doubling.

No problem at all! Just thought I'd give my personal opinion. Wait for a couple more responses to this thread before you make any drastic decisions (like spending it) with this coin. It's always possible that I am incorrect...I've made mistakes before .

Die deterioration doubling from badly worn dies.

I see this on a high percentage of dimes. My best guess would be improper die alignment, in relation to depth. The dies press into the (coin) too deeply, causing the metal to spread away from the center. If my opinion is correct there would be zero added value to this type of error since it is so common.
