I was going through some change I had and noticed this 1988 D Penny had it's mint mark seem to be slightly off of where a mint mark would normally be located. Was not sure if this was anything special, so I'm asking the community. I also included a 1989 D penny for reference of where I think the mint mark should be located on the 88.

    Thanks for looking!

In 1988 the mint mark was hand punched into each individual die. Your coin is normal. If you look at enough mint marked cents, you'll see them all over the place. (As long as it's in the area below the date).

Ah ok, I did not know they were hand punched at the time, that makes more sense. Thanks for the answer!

It also looks like there is some split plating. Many mintmarked Zincoln cents from the 80s have this problem. The plated copper layer is very thin and occasionally the plating will split at the edges of the device exposing the zinc. Once the zinc is exposed it wil darken and can start to corrode (Similar to a car fender rusting).
