I think that is called a rail-road rim....I think it is caused by the collar not being right when the coin was struck. Somebody else will know better that I would. Speedy
This is post-strike damage. The "partial collar" is adjacent to the obverse face, rather than the reverse face. This is impossible in a 1988 nickel, since inverted die installation didn't commence until about 1996 for nickels. The metal has been pushed up and over the date, which is impossible in a genuine striking error.
