Thank you @Autoturf ! Interesting read . Though I’m not sure what the flake would be? Part of the die? Or is it left over metal (planchet)from being hammered a million times? Definition: When a thick flake spalls off the interior of the die face it leaves a void we call an interior die break. It appears on the coin as a featureless lump.
This is why they have to clean the dies or replace them. I think the center of the 9 on the die got full of metal and broke off in your 9 on your coin because that is one perfect fit. Therefore internal die break.
No no no! The issue is simple. The incused 9 on the Die broke away a bit. The raised metal is the planchet itself that raised up into the void when tons of pressure was used to strike the blank. It is not extra metal of any kind.
I was looking for the letters IDB inside the nine. That would be one sweet trick but when I looked closely it looked like Pac Man to me. I think I'll go take my nap now. lol
Why would there be damage to the planchet? The defect on the die results in the chip that shows up in the 9.
