My son found a 1987 penny but is the same color as a nickle. its in excellent shape and seems to have no errors other than the color . It is also magnetic??? Any idea what it may be?

Howdy Rn2Kool - Welcome to the Forum !!

Can't say for sure without seeing the coin - but it sounds like an ordinary cent that has had the copper stripped off the zinc underneath. They are quite common actually.

    Welcome, Rn2Kool.

It sounds like you have a steel plated cent.
These are altered coins that have no numismatic value, but are interesting looking aren't they?

Plating coins is accomplished through a fairly simple procedure that is often the subject of jr. high school science projects.

You should be able to tell that the plated coin is slightly heavier than a normal cent.

    Good luck!
