1987 Penny Is this a Mint Error ?

    Hi Abe, I don't think that is a mint error. It looks more like it was hit with something and/or zinc rot has started there.
    Do you see the little " pimples ", lines and cracks scattered throughout the coin? Those are signs of plating blisters, sometimes caused by zinc rot under the " skin " of the coin.Starting roughly in mid-1982, Lincoln cents were made of zinc with a thin coating of copper. Zinc is very reactive to moisture and can form bumps, lines and even holes under the right (read that as wrong)circumstances.

    Basically, what you have there is referred to here on Coin Talk !! as DEFDAM (Definitely Damaged).
