1987 Lincoln Ear Deformity

    What do you make of the spike-like trail extending from Lincoln's ear on this 87? I've looked at it under a 15x loupe and it's not a scratch. IMG_20160202_151822566_HDR[1].jpg

    Common die deterioration?

    It definitely looks like a gouge on the coin. One sure way to tell is to examine it under higher magnification and see if you can see any metal pushed out along the edge (crater effect).

    I'm more interested in the "spike" to the right. It looks like it is raised.

    Actually, this is quite fitting imo if indeed raised.
