I found a Lincoln 1987 D Lincoln penny, it looks like a garbage coin. There are all kinds of errors on this coin so I'm not sure if all the damage occurred at the mint or elsewhere. There are all kinds of raised dots on the coin, doubling of the letters, added letters, etc... so I would think the looks of the coin came from the mint that way because of the errors. My question is if this does have doubling of the letters and as bad of shape as it looks would it still be considered as a collectible coin? I'm trying to find out if its a waste of my time to even look for errors on a coin that looks like this. Thank you for your help.

You're wasting your time because it is a crappy Zincoln, and this is what typically happens to a crappy Zincoln when it has been exposed to the environment.

Welcome to the forum. Basically both answers given above are correct, but as you will find, the personalities of the members will vary a lot. In Amos's answer, the PMD he mentioned is Post Mint Damage and the die deterioration refers to the fact that as a die is used to make huge number of coins, it does slowly alter their surface and oddities show up, but because it is a normal event of time ( like our wrinkles) , it is not considered abnormal. Chris , who obviously doesn't like the newer cents that are a zinc core in copper coat because they are easily damaged and altered in normal circulation ( hard to find an older one still very nice at that age. He doesn't bite.
So keep looking and thanks for presenting the photos , many do not. Jim

Thank you so much for the information, as I was reading the top too I wasn't at all sure what either of them were talking about so I was still at square one with my question until you gave me an explanation. I do appreciate your time an patience. Thanks again Kim

Although many might not feel it is so, looking for error or varieties is like looking at camouflage or those 3D optical page books and not seeing it, not seeing it, and then I see it. The brain is trying to figure out what the eyes are seeing and if it hasn't experienced it before, it can't see the difference. Unfortunately, it takes a while to form the pathways, but stick with it and in a time you will be answering these questions from others.
