Probably most of more experienced have seen these old, old ANACs certs and wondered how they compared. Here are 3 of mine I had certified by ANACs in 1987 and then sent into ICG this summer. The old certs did not slab the coin, just put it into a polyethylene sleeve into a stiff plastic flip paperclipped to the photos. Here is the first. A 1934-S Peace. Went from a 45/45 ( they graded each side separately) to a AU-55 , but added cleaning ! Here is another : Here is the back of the cert on this one: And a last one : I was hoping of course that this one would come in as MS60:whistle:, but maybe in another 20 years ! If you find these old certs at a show , look carefully!! and consider. Jim
Thanks Spock! For the comment and looking. I always ask the dealers if they have any ANACs photo certified coins, and usually they just stare at me. At least I hope that is why they stare at me! Jim
you are welcome. i couldnt even find one on the bay i have ben trying to get one myself but tis a challenge. if you wear any of your jewelelry at the show that might be another reason why they stare at you
The oddity is that even though I make it, I seldom wear it. I also have some coins in the old PCGS "rattler" slabs, and they also have a similar upgrade potential, but not yet. I took one of these to my coin club and never saw so many blank faces. Several had their briefcases or 2x2 boxes filled with the current slab types and it hasn't much hit them that things change. I was real happy to see the 34-S and the 84-S go up! Jim
I have those rattler slabs and some nice coins in them but those were no brainers they just happened to be in that kind of slab but anacs is really tough to get like that i dont care if it upgrades or is even a common coin i just would want oneas a reminder of the history of TPG's nice job on the upgrades
You are probably familiar with this site, but I find it so interesting! http://www.sampleslabs.com/ Jim
Jim- Thanks for sharing the photos of the old ANACS pre-slab. That is the first time I have every seen that and wasn't even aware they did it that way in the past. Also thanks for the link on the sample slabs. Great resource. Take care. Craig
If you'd like some more history, especially NGC slabs, I suggest you read this thread by our own Conder101. He is an amazing and very knowledgeable collector that I wish would post more here. Anyway, here's his thread on NGC slab history: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2248404&nt=2&fpart=1
That is a good thread. I get most of coins certified by NGC. Never saw the black slab before. Lots of changes to the slabs through the years. Thanks for posting it.:thumb:
Sampleslab belongs to Cameron Keifer (sp?), not Conder. Couple of things about the old ANACS certs. Back then they used an entirely different grading standard. Surprisingly, that standard was tightened in later years. What they used to grade a 65 became a 63. But to the best of my knowledge they did not note cleaning back then. They would however refuse issue a cert for some problem coins, just like some of the TPG's do today. Now, the interesting thing is that even though the grading standards were tightened, those coins upgraded when they probably should have been downgraded. That tells you something about how the new ICG grades.
Hi All I know thisis an old post but let me see if anyone is still around to read it. desertgem:Your right about the stares you get from dealers on asking for ANACS photocerts, Rattlers and Sample slabs. And out of business TPG’s. I enjoy confusingdealers with all of those old holders. I do bring 20 or 30 Items with me justto show them off. Most are interested in them. I went to a local coin club meetingwith the rattlers and photo certs and even though most of the members seemed olderthan me (I am 54) all I got was a bunch of blank stares. I had a lot of fun. Today I amcollecting all of these old holders, 1972-1990 if you can call that stuff old, today. If you likePCGS Rattlers, I have a few of them listed at PCGS, you can Google search ‘PCGSRattlers” and find my set at PCGS or go to Collector showcase and click other, look for “RJP Rattler Collection”. I am workingon an article for ANACS Photo Certs and the research has been a lot of fun. When coincollecting: buy the coin and not the holder, when sample slab collecting: buythe slab and not the coin. Hope someonereads this! Thanks and have fun. Bob
Yeah , it is an old post. The idea of buying the coin rather than the holder is a solid foundation. As well as recognizing that grading standards are a moving target by all of the grading services, but it does take practice to grade a coin. Welcome to the forum! Jim
Jim Thanks, what a quick reply, This I wasn't expecting. Later I will start a new post on the photo certs. BTW how do I post a picture? The FAQ does not say, at least I did not find it. Thanks, Bob
Perhaps you have read this http://www.cointalk.com/t8566/ I find the easiest way is to keep them on photobucket.com and then when I want to put one in a post, get its direct URL address from photobucket, click on the icon above where you typed your post, that looks like a picture frame ( left of the film strip), click photo is from url, and insert the url address. You can also upload it from your computer using the same icon. Jim
dwhiz Two great looking coins. From what I can see of thephoto certs they are both a type 5 issued only a couple of months in 1983. Thetype 4, 5 and 6 were all issued in 1983. If you could post the dates of the twocerts this might help to get a closer call on when one cert stopped and thenext started. Although it seems that there have been some over lapping of thedifferent types anyway. I guess that could be to one person setting up the newlabel and issuing them out and the next person not wanting to change and keepsissuing the older labels. Thanks for sharing, Bob
Howdy Bob - Welcome to the Forum ! About those ANACS certs and the dates. Do you have a copy of Conder101's book ? I ask because some what you are listing as dates contradicts what is in Conder's book. Type 4 for example, was first used in 1980 and use ended in '83. Type 5 was used in '83 only. And type 6 was used from '83 and ended in 1985. Small differences maybe, but if you are writing an article and you don't have Conder's book, you might want to look for one.
