At an upcoming auction there is a set of 1986-S Commemorative Flying Eagles, one gold and one silver, both are 1 troy oz. and come in a wooden display box with a certificate. I can not find any information about these coins. Not even the all powerful Google.com comes up with any information. Does anybody know anything about these coins?

It is for sure that they were not minted at the US Mint! They are bullion at best and probally will not carry any numismatic value. Run Forest Run....

The answer to your question is right there on that certificate. They were made by a private mint. They may be genuine .999 gold & silver - and they may not.

But I wouldn't buy 'em to find out

I might be willing to take a chance on the silver round bidding bullion value less postage because the financial risk is small. I'd never buy a gold round.

I see that the "ASSAY CERTIFICATE" (lol) is signed by a Victor Dupre, president and that he accidently forgot to check the little boxes that say gold and silver. He's probably just busy, being president and all... :=))

if you want an ounce of gold buy an eagle or a krug.

The auction was on saturday and the finally bid was $550. I didn't bid on these but there was a couple of guys who were fighting over this set. The coins looked ok in the display but even with out maginification i could see a few scratches on both. I think somebody had taken them out of thier holders and played with them. I did ask the auctioneer if he had ever heard of these coins before and he said no but since this was a seized items auction they have to sell everything as advertised. The same guy who bought these also paid $550 a piece for 10 1975 Krugs that were kept in a small velvet bag and almost all of the other gold coins available. I guess he likes gold no matter what it costs. hopefully he wont be at the next auction. I hate getting shut out at thses things.

it might be lucky for you if he does show up...that way you can save you money!!!...if you are like me I would spend it all on the first one I saw and then the next one would be better.

Most of the time people like that will go to any price to get what they want...its best just to step out of the way and let them get it...I saw a lady bid over $6 per WL Half dollar that I can get for $2.50-$3.00 per coin at the shop up town...
