possibly. yes and no. possible no copper- but remember it is possible to remove the copper. die cracks-- yes. PMD? I don' see it.
I have concerns also. The extensive 'die crack' does not look like die cracks I have seen on a cent size coin. It is north -south long enough and the crack has 'globular' portions rather wide. I think this would have broken off when striking. I wonder if it might be a result of the copper being physically removed. Also, even though I haven't see a photo of the edge of a certified unplated cent, the linear grooves on edge doesn't seem to fit with the idea of a smooth collar. Although this would not be a chemical removal of the copper, as usual on these where we just have photos, one must consider a chemical deposit of zinc. I think the thread could grow to multiple pages, with the only conclusion to see if it is authenticated by high level TPG.
the PMD i was referring to is under the A in AMERICA and in front of the S of pluribus. is it a lamination? the missing A is rot, correct?
That wasn't the intention of my statement. I was saying that just based on photos, I could not feel confident in judging one way or another. Yes there are lots of possibilities, and if it was a mint error, the value would outweigh the cost of getting it authenticated, if not, a loss. Just I can not see how anyone could definitively answer without it in hand for careful examination, so the answers here will not be conclusive. Maybe neither is a TPG, but at least then it is marketable.
