I have run across this a few times lately and it is particularly strong on this coin so I thought I would try to photograph it and share it with the group and try to get some other opinions. I have notice only what I can describe is a ghost date on some Lincoln's particularly on the late 80's Lincoln's this particular coin though the second numbers are quite well defined, raised and well rounded. Any thoughts or opinions will be greatly appreciated. I am seeing quite a few of these and I was thinking if I am seeing them quite often then others may be also. And a discussion of them might help others understand this along with myself. Also I forgot to add arrows pointing out the raised and rounded marks to the West and South-East of the Mint Mark Terry
As I am sure you know, most Lincolns from that era are very poor in quality and this, in my experience, is relatively common. Most likely it is die-deterioration-doubling, but could possibly have something to do with the plating, which was also an issue on Cents of the mid to late 1980s. The angle at which the lettering (and especially the mintmark) comes off of the field is much stronger than that of the bust, and is often the cause of plate-doubling/splitting. Regardless, these are not doubled dies.
