I found this at the bank today. It's slightly larger than a regular penny and the edges are slightly burred so I'm thinking that someone was just playing around, on the other hand the detail is good so whoever did this put time and effort into it. I have heard of rare aluminum pennies and so I thought I would let you guys take a look at it. Any ideas where something like this might originate? PS. - I put it next to a zinc for size reference, their coloring is more or less the same. update - read here for more info. http://www.cointalk.org/thread11468-like-the-other-penny-but-regular-sized.html and here http://www.cointalk.org/thread10845-oversized-penny.html
I can't say for sure but I would say damaged with a hammer and a thick piece of leather.....I'm pretty sure its not the aluminum cent. Can you get a weight of the coin?? Speedy
I've never heard anything to indicate that the fabled aluminum cent is larger than normal. The leather/hammer theory and a light acid bath to remove the copper coating seems likely to me.
1 million aluminum cents were minted in the 70's, and then 999,999 were destroyed according to the mint, and 1 was saved for display. If it is an aluminum, you should buy us all 09s-vdb's as a present. :goof: :thumb:
lol leather, a hammer, and a nice acid bath sounds about right to me. I wonder if I could duplicate it? I'm surprised how much detail was preserved. Thanks for the input everyone. update: If your interested another poster shared a similiar coin here... http://www.cointalk.org/thread11468-like-the-other-penny-but-regular-sized.html the comments go into some more depth, pretty interesting.
Fake. It's impossible to get proportional expansion of the design on both faces. I've seen a lot of similar cents. The plating is almost always removed. Why, I don't know.
