Hey all I got this in change today and I first thought sweet a clip but looking further Im not sure, I compared it to my 74 that I know is a clip and I just dont see the blakesley effect that my 74 has..You think this is a true clip that has just been in circulation too long or a shed job?
Not all clips show the Blakesley effect. Clips made outside of the mint usually have the characters just at the clip as sharp, real clips show them to be "faded" towards the clip. Show us the entire coin.
Looks like Blakeley to me, wait till someone comes along who knows more than me...that's about anyone.
I have studied a little on this type of error and usually can tell if it is a shed job but there are people out there that are good at making these types of errors and Im not that experienced to tell the real ones from the good fakes so thank goodness for CT
Here is a good way to look at it.. Why a quarter that might be a clip look so well circulated after 31 years and nobody has noticed that it is different?
same reason why this was not caught after 42 years, either it was liberated from someones collection or like a coworker said "I would think that someone was having fun with a dremel"
By the way.. did you notice that your 1985 also is a Misaligned Die Strike? See the False Double Rim going from 9:00 up and around to about the 3:00 position.
yes I did but I see so many MAD that I stopped mentioning them unless they are so severe they are missing a part of legend or design or completely so mismatched that they look like OCS.
I wish I could help here, but clips aren't my thing . Here's a coin fred has for sell, maybe this could help out here . http://www.ebay.com/itm/1942-W-L-50...c2bd534&pid=100033&rk=1&rkt=8&sd=391625926643
It looks like a clip to me, too. The only thing that looks odd is the deformation opposite the clip at 1 o'clock. Perhaps, as @paddyman98 pointed out, it is also a misaligned die strike and that has affected its shape. I guess anything is possible. Chris
The coin is a genuine clip. What Chris is seeing IS the Blakesly effect. And @Kentucky is correct - sometimes it does not show.
The Blakesley Effect is the first thing I look for when I see a clip, but what is unusual about this one is the dip in the center of the Blakesley Effect. You don't usually see that! Chris
