    Nickels are a notoriously hard coin on dies, what I think you are seeing is die deterioration and a spreading of the lettering. Another factor may be that the lettering is slightly wider at the bottom of the letters as it nears the coin. As the coin is worn in circulation and the top of the lettering is worn off it gives the appearance of a wider lettering.
