Hello everyone. I was searching a roll of 85-D quarters and found an odd one. The mint mark is a little weak and is slightly farther to the right and rotated every so slightly toward the 11 o'clock position. I compared it to others in the roll and it is the odd man out. Photo #2 is normal and #1 is the quarter in question. Is anyone aware of a die variety or mint error for this series? Could you also take a look at the "8" in the date? It looks round on picture #1 and flat on picture #2. Thanks for the help. TJ
The mint marks were hand punched into the dies through 1989. So there is no normal location. They happen in various areas on that quadrant of the coins. http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/1986-D_Angled_Mint_Mark_Placement.jpg http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/1987D-1MM-003_illustrated.jpg http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/LOW_MINT_MARK.jpg
