I believe is a double mint mark and also under linclon on the rim ,not sure what it is, a clip that cracked the penny a little bit, it's raised like a cud I'm not sure
Hey check this out @Gator I got one that has the classic Florida sink hole going. Your mint mark hasn’t fallen in the hole yet though, just wait it will. Lol. I can still see the mintmark in the hole with my microscope!
@Gator Pure Zinc Rot Damage There are no RPM Repunched Mint Marks for Copper Plated Zinc Cents. Just plating issues not considered errors nor varieties.
All the more is the reason to enjoy them before they literally disappear. If that’s your sort of thing. I decided earlier this year that I wasn’t going to actively collect past 1982 to avoid the future realization of a collection that had rotted to nothingness. I do search bank rolls so still get to do zinc varieties and save superb examples when found. But they won’t last even in a slab.
The "never clean coins" thing is really very generic advice intended for those both very new and who may be tempted to clean more valuable material. With something like this absolutely no harm will come, and in fact, cleaning coins using different methods is an excellent way to learn to identify them. The greater point is that if unsure, simply ask, but don't be afraid to trash low or no (beyond face) value material.
I agree that almost every posting of an RPM, for the plated zinc cents, is nothing but plating or zinc rot issues. There are a few legitimate RPM's for these cents. CONECA has a listing, and 4 are on their Top 100 list. I would not want to lead someone astray by saying there are absolutely none, but what is the higher probability is that it is just plating issues.
Indeed. While not as plentiful as some previous dates, there most certainly are Zincoln RPMs. Kudos for properly addressing this. Edited to add: while said varieties do exist, it's also worth mentioning that they're only possible on cents dates up to and including 1989 as that was the final year for mintmarks being punched into the dies.
@dchjr @352sdeer Sorry guys.. I'm not perfect or ever said I was I will try to remember what books has stated!
No harm, no foul. It takes a bigger person to admit and address their mistakes; unfortunately, this is also something all too often lacking on this board. Kudos for being one of the exceptions.
Sometimes we're teachers, and sometimes we're students. If we only claim to be one or the other we're fooling ourselves.
