I was a bit surprised to see that a 1984FM Papua New Guinea Proof Set sold this morning on eBay for $1025+! This surprised me as it was only in the cardboard and did NOT include either the box or COA!! These had gone up a couple of years ago and then stabilized, and possibly on the rise again. There were quite a few bidders, so not a shilled lot. First, let me state that I am a collector and had nothing to do with this auction but in a small way may be reflecting the market as a whole: the very top pieces or sets do well, and the other not so. The proof sets from the years 1975-80 languish at basically bullion or just a bit higher. The specimen sets from the later years 1982-83 do well also.
As an active participant in this market, many of the Franklin Mint-produced sets, both uncirculated, proof and the occasional all sterling silver proof, from 1980/1981 through 1985 are often pricey, exceed $100-$200 each, sometimes $500 each. Most of these year sets are low mintage, with less than 1000 sets.
Yes, and a few much less! They are fun to chase and have not gotten outrageous. This price did surprise me though.
I saw the 1984 Trinidad proof set from same seller with MULTIPLE bidders went 540 USD also without packaging or COA. Interestingly, the 1983 set with only the larger coins in silver (quite rare) and also without packaging or COA went 350.
