Hi everyone, new here, new to coin searching. Either this lincoln penny was already in my change or it was found in my first coin roll hunt (the two got mixed together) Very addicting by the way! Pretty certain this is a 1984d Doubled Die on the obverse, You can see it on the date, a little bit in liberty (the L is a bit fat) and in the word "god" especially, plus it matches the doubled die listing From doubleddie.com as 1984d ddo-001 or -002 but more than that there's this wierd uneven surface going on with the planchet itself. Obverse only, the reverse seems fine, the word "america" is pretty close to edge, but when magnified you can see it's not quite making contact. On the obverse you can see where the elevated surface curves above the word liberty then up and around cutting through the words in god we trust then all the way towards the date and back into lincolns bust. Magnified the separation of the two levels looks like a crack in the planchet as you can see in my "god" picture. Hopefully that makes sense. Can you guys see that too? Is it just post mint damage or something more? I tried looking up known planchet errors, even post mint damage examples, but couldn't find anything matching this. Anyone have any insight or am I just crazy and looking way too deeply into this? ;)

What you have is a Worn Die Strike which created DDD - Die Deterioration Doubling all throughout the Obverse.
Common issue on Copper Plated Zinc Cents.
This is why you see that weird effect in the lettering of IGWT

ah okay, maybe on the words in god we trust, I could see that, but would you say for the date too? because there's this variety on the doubleddie.com site here: http://doubleddie.com/828865.html

that I'm pretty convinced matches what I'm seeing here on my coin. Any thoughts on the unevenness of the surface itself? Thank you!

Welcome to CT. Not the kind of doubled die you want to find.

Please explain wonky. I've never heard that word. Must be a generation gap word. lol

I think I do. Is it possible to have worn strike issue on a doubled die? Could it be both then?

Thank you! Oh, pardon my inexperienced lingo, "wonky" in this case I mean to just point out the uneven surface of the coin. the area around lincolns head dips down compared to the lower half of the coin. here's another image (same as above but) where I outlined the raised surfaced.

Now, can I ask why is this not a good kind to find?

That's normal on a Zinc cent, aka a zlincolns.? Zinc is soft and it looks terrible in a short period of time. Cheap but this is normal. Lots of other issues with it as well in coins.

Thank you Thank you! I'm pretty thrilled to find something so soon after I start looking! It's no million dollar coin, but it's pretty cool in my book! Thank you everyone who responded to this thread!

I got a free appraisal from Heritage Auctions, and they said if it were to be recognized to be a ddo by a major grading company it could be worth around $30-$40, though it could cost that much to get graded.
