1984 S proof half dollar with oddness above I. what is this?

    Is that effect repeated elsewhere on the coin, or just there?

    I'm guessing it is either from die wear (on a proof die???) or die chip. Just throwing in my opinion while I wait for someone to post a good explanation

    Yep, I'm thinking there's a die chip. Since proofs are struck twice, I'm assuming die chips progress a little differently than on non-proofs.

    Proof coins have strange anomalies that non proof coins don't..
