Got another coin in my change over the weekend that caught my attention because of its condition. Like a brand new quarter with surface swirling aapearance. For a nearly 36 year old quarter found in general circulation, it looks great. I’m always amazed when I find these coins at that age in great condition in my pocket change.
Thank you. A month or so back when I first joined this forum, I had posted some really incredibly beautiful quarters that I had found in my pocket change which were proofs at one time. In that thread, a member stated that some coins are purposely placed into circulation as a way to generate renewed interest in coin collecting. Since reading that comment, I now often wonder who puts these such coins into general circulation. This current 1984 quarter which is in really great shape. Those two proof quarters that still had good amount of "frost" on them that I had made a thread to when I first joined. I sort of worry about it though, in the event someone's collection was stolen in a burglary and the crook(s) just spent the money at face value. Lot's of burglaries going on these days where I live (San Francisco Bay Area). I'd hate to find out the really nice coins I'm finding in my daily pocket change originated from someone's stolen collection. Or, maybe someone rich wants to make people happy by putting in a bunch of old coins they had held onto for many decades. In a few years this most recent quarter I found is going to be 4 decades old!
Yeah, my kid sister did that with a stack of 1964 quarters my mother had in her jewelry box about 20 years ago. My sister's habit though was McDonald's with her friends. And she didn't know the quarters were any different then non-silver quarters. So she spend them at McDonald's and at her earliest opportunity, she replaced them with other quarters before my mother noticed them missing. Only problem is, they were replaced with regular modern quarters. Doh... At least she told the truth when asked.
