    I want to lean towards it being die deterioration. Interesting coin?
    Maybe a folded finned rim?

    Welcome to Coin Talk. It's always best if you would post photos of both sides of the entire coin and clear closeups of the area in question. That makes it easier for us to help determine what you have. It may look like one thing when only a closeup is shown but may be something else if the entire coin is shown. :)

    Take a normal picture of your cent. Don't use magnification which distorts the image.
