Just a quick question: I found a penny at work (Surprising, eh?) with an unusually large D mint mark. The regular mint marks are usually small, and this one is one is in a font as large as the date numbers. Is it of any value? I had a 'regular' one to comare it to, and there is a definite difference between the two. What do you pros think?? I'll attach pics of requested. The size of the D mint mark is about 1.-1.15mm high, and 1.3-1.4mm across. Added: This is a 1988 Lincoln cent.
1988... I dont know how I missed that tidbit of information And I didn't think my camera could do good closeups......
From the photo it looks fine....in 1988 (and years before) they didn't make the dies like they do now. they "punched" (for lack of a better word) the mintmark after the master die was made...that made for some mintmarks bigger and some of the "punches were smaller in size...(someone else will know a better way to tell this)...a lot of times they would mess up and have to put 2 D's one over top of the other...this made for what they call RPM...(Repunctured mintmarks)...I think they stop placing the mintmark this way in the 90's or late 80's.... So I think your coin is A ok.... Speedy
Oh... Darn I wish I had more than a penny, but oh well.. I make plenty of 'profit' on all the wheatbacks I get from work... I got a really nice 58-D with a purple reverse
3-4 cents each? I pay only 1% on the dollar Everything I find is pulled from circ ANd every now and then I get some rolls from the bank... Usually noit as fun as getting them from work, though.
