Hi Everyone! First time posting on the forum, and more or less a newbie collector since I started metal detecting... I ran across this yesterday, while out detecting, so I thought I would share. This looks pretty authentic to me?
need a close up on the error which I am guessing is the blob below the date. could be mint error or just some old dirt caked on there
Looks unusual...can't tell if it is raised or infuse, but either way I would probably attribute it to plating issues. (post 1982 cents are made up of a 97.5% zinc core with a 2.5% copper plating, and the fact that you found it detecting makes me think it is environment-induced plating issues)
I think you meant incuse....the c is near the f on the keyboard so it's probably a typo Often, it is easy to tell if a coin is just rotted around the mintmark. In this case, it would need to be looked at more closely. I can't tell if it is a die chip around the mintmark or a bubbling of the plating. Of course, the bubbling would be a common corrosion issue but a die chip around the mintmark would be something collectible although not worth too much.
I think either is possible. There is some very slight corrosion on the reverse. I'll get it checked out. Just thought it was interesting that whatever it is seems to be so centered over the mintmark. Thanks for the input, guys!
this is definately corrosion under the copper plating. the zinc has started to rot in this area and pushed the thin copper plating outwards. I can still see part of the D mintmark on top of this swelled out area.
