I do macro-photography with my microscope and this coin was brought in to me today. I took an imate at 60X.

It is clear this is not wear. The rim actually overlaps the 3 in the date. The numerals are squashed down some. I do not believe this is wear. There is no way the 3 could get worn that close to the rim... they would have merged together. But instead it is clear the rim is lying on top of the three.

We also looked at some other 83. They had well raised numerals and distinct gap between the 3 and the rim. The gap was as wide as the lower half of the numeral three. So there is absolutely no way this could be wear. Considering the width of the gap in the XF coin, there is no way the rim could overlay as this one does. The rim would have to be flattened completely and clearnly the rim is still there and overlays the 3. It is not physcially possible to be wear. This is an error but I do not know how common it is. Comments would be appreciated.
